I haven't mentioned the alleged plot of James Daniel Gunther to murder Claudia since the entire scenario was an attempt of Richard Gernon's to build paranoia in Gunther to take his position as O.T.O. Director. At the time, Gernon was having a sexual relationship with Claudia, and gloated in the thought that he could use this with advantage to maneuver Claudia into tricking Marcelo Motta into giving him higher Grades and position. Yet to accomplish such a maneuver he knew he had to push James Daniel Gunther out of power.
Gunther and Gernon had been down in Gunther's bedroom talking, speculating, getting paranoid, ruach masturbation, whatever you want to call it. Richard Gernon cleverly speculated that perhaps Motta had sent Claudia to kill Gunther! Gernon asked Gunther what he would do if this was indeed the case. Gunther replied, "Well if somebody comes gunning for me, I guess I would shoot to defend myself."
That's what Gernon turned into a Dan may assassinate Claudia. Gernon realized he was a little bit too successful with making Gunther paranoid, and he tried to undo a possible real murder. Gernon had *fed* Gunther's paranoia and manipulated it to his advantage.
To this day, I do not know if Gunther was really going to really make an attempt on Claudia's life and it wasn't foiled in time by Gernon. You must realize, however, that Gernon was a party to the crime, as it were, by his evil manipulations of Gunther, brought on by jealous fear and hatred. I've often wondered if Gernon didn't take his own life intentionally at least partially as a consequence of the internal conflict created by his behavior at this time, as well as his subsequent running away into the welcoming arms of the McMurty camp.
