THE WILL TO THE GREAT WORK
Written by Frater Thoth aka Frater H.O.T.
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law
Learn this also, that even the Will to the Great Work may be misunderstood of Men; for this Work must proceed naturally and without Overstress, as all true Works.' Liber AlephRight from the beginning of my Magickal Career I viewed myself as a mysterious magician of great powers and such an approach assisted me in attaining initiation; later on as I came into contact with others interested in occult I learned that there is a bigger difference then I thought between students of magick and those who actually know themselves to be magicians.
The difference is not only in the attitude for there are also those who falsely consider themselves to be magicians without practicing magick. True Aspirants will readily recognize my attempt to explain something sublime when they read that the obvious Mark of a True Magician is his or her eternal devotion towards the experiment of his life which is the Source of his or her Light, Love, Liberty and Life.
I stand and will always stand by my very strict opinion that one can never become a magician unless one is already born a magician. The great talent may be dormant in some people deeply hidden by intolerable society in which one may live, school education or cursed religious upbringing but it is always present and sooner or later it is brought forth by the process of initiation as the Aspirant comes across some magick book, occult order etc... that will trigger his interest stimulating the will towards the Path of magickal destiny which he will never leave.
With time the flaming passion does not diminish; on the contrary, it grows to such an extend when the Aspirant cares of nothing but the Great Work and now you are not merely a practitioner or a student of occult arts, at this stage magick manifests from the very depth of your being; in a sense you feel that you are a magickal being.
I once heard an apparently low sorcerer after going through our literature call us a 'hard core occultists up to the point of abstinence' without noticing the shouting contradiction of his own statement. It is a common misconception that devotion has something to do with isolation of ascetic lifestyle. I observed people profess to be practicing or 'studying' occultism who have deep psychological fear of actually taking magick seriously.
However one should not blame them, they are undergoing a process of slow evolution having a mere interest in occultism. I had once written that it is not enough to have an interest in my attempt to emphasize the importance of the Work; but now I understand that there are those for whom it is more then enough for one incarnation; perhaps it will take them quite a few incarnations to finally realize the importance of the Great Work and a few more to find the courage to do it.
How terrible I assume it must be for some people to see a zealous magician busy with the Great Work? They fear what they do not know and therefore they begin to hate. Opposition to devotion & zeal in the Great Work is merely a self defense mechanism either of the ego that fears to be disintegrated or the whole society which is trying to protect itself from being destroyed by the subtle but powerful influence of a devoted magician upon its structure; the principle is the same in both cases.
True evolution always poses a great threat to the whole set of old outworn habits that we may have, social morals and laws. So it is with the Great Work; once the Aspirant has solemnly stepped upon the path he will always move forward unto the Unknown; if he stops either out of cowardice or laziness he is ruined.
One should never force this zeal upon oneself, instead one should proceed calmly yet firmly; the devotion must flow naturally from within as it will at a certain stage in your career if you go far enough. The forced zeal which is not being fortified by spiritual experience and flaming will towards the object of your devotion can degenerate into mere fanaticism that will lead nowhere but enslavement of yourself and others; this is exactly the mistake deliberately reinforced by the black brothers upon their flock of stupefied zombies with whom we have nothing in common.
True devotion comes from infinite love that increases over the years of practicing magick which others may no doubt often mistake for a cold attitude of some mysterious wizard with dark intentions who cares for nothing and no one at all but his own selfish aims.
Magicians have been described as cold and mystifying creatures of hell out of multitudes ignorance and misunderstanding. On the contrary; the will towards the Great Work flames with such force of intensity that makes these descriptions sound naive if not foolish. In fact magicians are among the greatest romantics of the world.
They are adventurous artists of life and talented poets of the soul, they are thoughtful philosophers of mysteries and passionate lovers of lustful women. Yet we have been accused of being cold for we do not concern ourselves with the woes of low men, their confused emotions of jealousy or pathetic cries for consolation.
We know for certain that those are dangerous traps set by the weak vermin in their attempt to ensnare the strong; their reaction is typical when the last thing they see is our sword swinging across their necks. We see peoples naive tricks before they try using them on us; no wonder we are accused of being wicked!
To an Aspirant the development of this Will to the Great Work is a feeling of being complete or whole. The zeal in the practices is the fulfillment of your magickal nature; a magician is who you are. You are no longer just walking the path; you become your path. You care of nothing else just as a sprinter in the stadium who is properly concentrated on his performance does not hear the noises of the crowd.
Anything that may stand on the way of executing your will is silently illuminated without wavering your attention from your real goal. Business, family, entertainment, socializing etc... all those worldly things are still a part of your life; but your attitude towards them is as chess players attitude towards the game that can indeed be cared for, loved, concentrated on and greatly enjoyed but never mistaken with reality. To a magician Initiation is the Gateway to that reality; everything else is an illusion which he enjoys.
Love is the law, love under will
